I wanted to see if there were any traceable connections between where and when artists passed and what art styles existed. This was done by assembling the visualization and then taking a look at the art works of those who died next to one another. Given my background not in art analysis it was difficult for me to find similarities, but some interesting things I noticed is that of the artists who died in Europe a majority of them used bright colors in their work such as Asger Jorn, and Hans Laabs. While artists who died in the americas used calmer tones and more brown and grey such as Hedda Sterne.

Sources: The following data sets were used for the visualization process. The original dataset was pulled straight from the Google Drive shared with the class, and the other was one in which I introduced latitude and longitude coordinates, given the location listed for a place of death and I also removed rows missing crucial information such as place or time of death. The dataset itself is a collection of artists with columns including their time and place of death along with links to some of their artwork. These artists are all from an extremely popular collection titled the Tate collection.

OriginalDataSetDownload

DataSetWithCordinatesDownload

Processes: The leading platform I used to construct this visualization was flourished. It was the platform I felt the most comfortable in and provided a means for comparing artists’ work with other artists who died near them. One of the things I did add to the original data set, as mentioned earlier, was to incorporate coordinates alongside the locations listed for place of death. During this process, I decided also to clean out some of the incomplete data within the sections of interest. The creating of the model in flourish was the main DH process I used. When it came to the analysis, after generating the global display I went through each major region with multiple artists and looked for similarities and differences in their works. I was able to find some interesting things such as artists who died in Europe using bright colors in their work such as Asger Jorn, and Hans Laabs. While artists who died in the americas used calmer tones and more brown and grey such as Hedda Stern

Presentation: To give a good view of the different locations of deaths for the artists, I went for a 3D global visualization map that is interactive and allows you to look at the points and see the name, year, place, and URL of the artist’s work. This was done to introduce the process of looking into whether artists who died around one another shared similar styles and if they didn’t. I wanted to incorporate the year aspect of giving viewers more context as to why artists’ styles around the same area were wildly different or possibly similar. In order to share the model onto this website I uploaded the HTML to WordPress so that people could directly interact with the model on this site.

Significance: What insights can be gained by applying your chosen digital approach to the data? As I said previously, the insights from this approach could be to compare and contrast the artworks of artists from this collection who died near one another to come to specific conclusions about different styles from the areas. To conduct this competently, some knowledge of the art in the region would be beneficial, but unfortunately, I do not possess it, and so I could only come to little conclusions. How does it relate to Digital Arts & Humanities as opposed to data science generally? This project relates to the Digital Arts & Humanities rather than data science generally because of the mapping and the internal linking to the arts that I wanted this project to be used for. Specifically, this model and someone knowledgeable come together to come to interesting and insightful conclusions rather than just compiling data. A possible pitfall of this display has to do with the knowledge required and time spent to search using the url provided. I could imagine that looking through each region could be difficult and hard to discover similarities and differences, but I hope that someone would approach the model with a question in mind so that they could maximize their benefit from the model.

Introduction: For this project, I decided to look at the Tate artwork collection and put together a global visualization of the year and place of death, along with a URL linking to some of the artist’s work.
